Almost eighty years ago, the first human donned a costume. The Crimson Avenger sided with a mob to become apart of their operation and then bring them down. Only a year later, Franklin Delano Roosevelt brought together five other costumed 'Mystery Men' to form the Justice Society of America. In the next few years, heroes began to crop up around every corner leading to the JSA to become bigger and bigger. World War II ended the Justice Society.

Many heroes chose to fight in the war under their civilian identities. However, new heroes were brought together to protect the mainland. The heroes fought against Nazi conspiracies and Fascist collaborators. The end of the war was the harbinger of the end of the Golden Age of Heroes. The communist scare led by Joseph McCarthy lead to the heroes being given a choice of revealing their identities of being labeled as traitors. The heroes kept on their masks, and left their heroic days behind them. Twenty years would pass before the world would see such heroes again.

Superman appearing in Metropolis led to the new generation of heroes. Altered DNA due to the atomic bomb, powers granted by ancient deities, and aliens of all types began to appear on Earth in surplus. An alien threat brought these heroes together, and keeping together, they formed the Justice League of America. Many other teams began and ended in the next ten years. Infinity Incorporated, the Teen Titans, and the Outsiders, led by the vigilante/hero Batman, all fought to protect the world in their own way from injustice. However, as the heroes banded together, so would the villains. The Secret Society of Super-Villains was formed.

The villains planned to attack Metropolis, the home of Superman. If Superman's city fell, they believed the rest would also. They planned and manipulated events across the world. The Metropolis attack was the accumulation of it all. Magic was changed because of these mechanizations. Planets were at war. Regular humans had been given powers to aggravate the situation further. Chaos reigned. When Metropolis was attacked, the heroic magic users teleported the heroes and villains from the midst of the city to a Kansas cornfield. That act ended the ninth age of magic by shattering the barriers. The battle continued on with neither side giving up. Lex Luthor (in a final bid to destroy Superman) sent a nuclear bomb to clear the table completely and let man choose their own destiny. Hundreds of thousands died. The bomb destroyed Topeka in the process. The age of heroes was over. Some said forever.
